Course Descriptions - Visual & Performing Arts

Students are required to complete 4 semesters of Physical Education to fulfill the graduation requirement. Those who do not fulfill the PE requirement through Interscholastic or Independent Athletics will be required to take Physical Education. The objective of this course is to equip students with skills they will employ in a lifetime of fitness and good health. Course contents may include team sports, fitness and good health, individual sports, weight training, and aerobics.

STRENGTH & FITNESS

PE Grades 9-12 One Semester

This course will focus on the four performance absolutes of play and work. Biomechanics – study of human movement and function;  Physical – flexibility and balance, combined with resistance training; Mental/Emotional – mind-set and motivation; Nutritional – food combining, food rotating to fuel the body; Functional Fitness training will combine integrated flexibility, body work and joint integrity, with machine and free weights all done to tolerance.  Students will be required to purchase and wear approved Option B PE clothing.

GIRLS AEROBICS

PE Grades 9-12 One Semester

This is a girls only course that will strengthen the cardiovascular system and improve endurance, flexibility and strength. The class combines instruction with strenuous exercise. Students will learn how to perform exercises in a safe, effective manner and will have the knowledge to accurately monitor exercise pulse rate and understand how to calculate target heart rates for different intensities.  Students will be required to purchase and wear approved Option B PE clothing.

INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETICS

PE Grades 9-12

Physical Education credit can be achieved through participation in an Interscholastic team sport. Enrollment in these courses will be made with the instructor’s prior approval.  These classes are held before and after regularly scheduled school hours and receive 5 credits.  A general athletic participation fee will apply.

Fall: Cross-Country, Girls' Volleyball, Football, Girls' Tennis, Cheer

Winter: Boys' and Girls' Soccer, Boys' and Girls' Basketball, Wrestling

Spring: Golf, Baseball, Softball, Boys' Volleyball, Track and Field, Swimming

THEATER CHOREOGRAPHY

PE Grades 9-12 One Semester

This course is designed to complement the Drama Production. When required by the current script, the students are able to earn PE credits by learning, perfecting, and performing stage combat and various types of choreography for the theater. These include physical activities such as hand combat, fencing and classic choreography like the waltz. The requirement is regularly scheduled instruction meeting at least 300 minutes per week under the on-going instruction of a qualified instructor.

INDEPENDENT PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Available by application and Administrative approval only

IPE is for the athlete who is training and/or performing/competing at a local, state, or national level in a sport not offered at CCHS. The course must be regularly scheduled instruction or training meeting at least 300 minutes per week under the on-going instruction of a qualified instructor. Application is available in the High School Athletic Office and is due during the first two weeks of the semester.
