Course Descriptions - Electives

FRENCH I 

College Prep Grades 9-12 Full Year

Prerequisite:  Freshmen must have grades of B’s or better both semesters in 8th grade English

This course is designed to introduce students to the basic disciplines, reading, writing, speaking, and listening, of the French language. Foundational vocabulary and grammatical structures are incorporated with cultural and historical aspects of France and other French speaking countries in order to develop simple conversation and comprehension skills.

FRENCH II

College Prep Grades 10-12 Full Year

Prerequisite:  French I with grades of C’s or better or Administrator approval.

This course is designed to increase the students’ proficiency of the French language by building upon the basic principles acquired from the previous year of study. All disciplines, including, listening, speaking, reading, and writing, are extended by the introduction of new vocabulary and grammatical structures. 

FRENCH III HONORS

Honors College Prep Grades 11-12 Full Year

Prerequisite: French II with grades of A’s in both semesters or Administrator approval.

This course, conducted primarily in French, is designed to increase French proficiency by intensely reviewing the vocabulary and grammatical structures acquired in French I and II at an accelerated pace. Instruction emphasizes the students’ development of fluency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in order to transition from acquisition to application of the French language. A chronological study of French history and an in-depth analysis of selected literary works by French authors are incorporated throughout the year.

AP FRENCH

Advanced Placement College Prep Grade 12 Full Year

Prerequisite: French III Honors with grades of B’s or better in both semesters or Administrator approval.  Students are required to pass the summer assignment.

This course is intended for qualified students and is equivalent to an entry-level college course.  Teacher and students at this level speak French only.  This course is designed to improve the students’ fluency of the French language. All disciplines, including reading, writing, listening and speaking, are integrated into this class to reinforce the students’ ability to express and comprehend French. Grammar is intensely reviewed in the context of contemporary and traditional French culture. In addition, students will continue to develop their abilities to analyze and evaluate selected literary works by French authors. Students are required to take the AP Exam in May.  Those who receive a score of 3, 4, or 5 may be eligible to receive college credit. 

SPANISH I  

College Prep Grades 9-12 Full Year

Prerequisite:  Freshmen must have grades of B’s or better both semesters in 8th grade English

This course is designed as an introductory and entry course in foreign language. It will introduce the student to the culture, language, and the people of Spanish-speaking countries. This course will focus on developing the initial listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills necessary to becoming proficient in the language.

SPANISH II 

College Prep Grades 10-12 Full Year

Prerequisite:  Spanish I with grades of C’s or better both semesters or Administrator approval.

This course, taught in both English and Spanish, will help the student attain proficiency in the four skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing. The student will learn the language within the context of the contemporary Spanish-speaking world and its culture.

SPANISH III

College Prep Grades 11-12 Full Year

Prerequisite:  Spanish II with grades of C’s or better both semesters or Administrator approval

This course is conducted in English and Spanish and emphasizes the review of grammatical concepts. Stress is placed on speaking and listening skills and conversational fluency. A study of Spanish America’s civilization and culture is also emphasized through the use of selected representative literary works by Latin American authors.

SPANISH III HONORS

Honors College Prep Grades 11-12 Full Year

Prerequisite:  Spanish II with grades of A’s both semesters or Administrator approval

This course is conducted primarily in Spanish and emphasizes the review of grammatical concepts learned in the first two years; only more complex sentences are used and analyzed. Stress is placed on speaking and listening skills and conversational fluency. A study of Spanish America’s civilization and culture is also emphasized through the use of selected representative literary works by Latin American authors. This course prepares the student for AP Spanish.

AP SPANISH

Advanced Placement College Prep Grade 12 Full Year

Prerequisite:  Spanish III Honors with grades of B’s or better both semesters or Administrator approval.  Students are required to pass the summer assignment.

This course is intended for qualified students and is equivalent to an entry-level college course. Teachers and students at this level speak Spanish only. The course emphasizes speaking fluency and vocabulary extension. Grammar is used more as a source to pinpoint weaknesses and errors than as a constructive study. Short stories, novels, newspapers, poetry, and other sources reflecting the greatness of Spanish literature are read and studied. Oral discussion in Spanish is conducted on an individual, small group and large group basis. Students are required to take the AP Exam in May.  Those who receive a score of 3, 4, or 5 may be eligible to receive college credit. 

ACADEMIC DECATHALON (OCAD)

Elective Grades 9-12 Fall Semester

Prerequisite:  Application and teacher recommendation

This class prepares the CCHS Academic Decathlon Team for local, state and national competition. The students study a wide variety of academic disciplines: history, government, economics, geography, literature, physics, biology, chemistry, and fine art. Students are required to have a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average. Can be taken more than once for credit.

ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY (ASB)/ STUDENT GOVERNMENT

Elective Grades 9-12 Full Year

Prerequisite:  Application and Interview

This extra-curricular course allows students an opportunity to participate in the governing branch of the school. Students learn delegation, time management, and financial skills through planning, organizing, and implementing events and fundraisers. May be taken more than once for credit.


ATHLETIC TRAINING

Elective Grades 9-12 One Semester

This course is designed for students interested in applicable sports medicine. Areas to be covered include injury observation, taping, and working with athletes of Calvary sports teams.  Can be taken more than once for credit.

CAMPUS SERVICE

Elective Grades 10-12 One Semester

This course requires Administrator approval

An on-campus work-experience program that allows students assist teachers in the classroom or learn general office skills.

DRIVER’S EDUCATION

No credit Grades 9-12 Six Weeks

Age requirements: Student must be age 15 by November 1 for fall semester, age 15 by April 1 for spring semester. Only 2 absences allowed to meet required time.

This 6-week course is designed to meet the classroom instruction required by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles. Upon completion of this segment, along with the successful completion of the DMV exam, a student of the appropriate age may receive a provisional driving permit.  This course is offered 4 sessions per school year, alternately 0 period and 8th period.   It is not counted as one of the required periods.

GIRLS’ DISCIPLESHIP

Elective Grades 9-12 One Semester

This course is designed to equip high school girls to face the challenges of everyday life in our secular society.  This class will include topics relating specifically to their individual needs: developing a consistent devotional life, learning to hear God’s voice through intimacy with Him, establishing godly friendships and relationships, and encouraging purity in all facets of life.  Girls will participate in small groups, field trips, service projects and retreats.  Can be taken more than once for credit.

HEALTH

Elective Grade 9 Spring Semester

All students are required to complete one semester of Health to fulfill state graduation requirements. This course will be assigned in the spring semester of freshmen year.

This course is designed to aid students in their knowledge of first aid, CPR techniques, and health practices. Instruction is also given in social interaction, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, socially transmitted diseases, and other items dealing with health. Students work on both individual and group projects.

LIFE SKILLS

Elective Grades 10-12 One Semester

BASED ON ENROLLMENT

As a refreshing 21st century approach to stages of life, this course prepares students for roles present and future such as living on their own, college life, job skills and relationships with friends, parents, spouses, raising children, in-laws, and caregivers.  Students will do various practical assignments, listen to speakers, and visit numerous nearby locations.

SAT PREP

Elective Grades 10-12 One Semester

Prerequisite:   Completion of geometry

Students will become familiar with the format of the test and the concepts, so that they will know what to expect on test day. They will thoroughly review these concepts and develop test-taking strategies, which will help them think their way through problems similar to those that appear on the SAT Reasoning test. Students will take many full length tests to put those strategies into practice.

SCORE

Elective Grades 10-12 One Semester

BASED ON ENROLLMENT 

This course is an academic support program designed for students who are capable, but need extra support to accomplish the regular college prep curriculum work.  Using the SCORE model which has been recognized by the US Department of Education, we teach and reinforce study skills and learning techniques.  The purpose of the Score class is to empower students to function at a satisfactory level of content mastery in all of their classes.

SPEECH

Elective Grades 9-12 Spring Semester

BASED ON ENROLLMENT

This class is an introductory course designed to give students experience in public communication.    Students are taught to select a topic, research, prepare an outline, and deliver both informative and persuasive speeches.  Students will also be given opportunities to use the skills they are taught to analyze other’s speeches and further increase their understanding and appreciation for public communication.

STUDY HALL

No credit Grades 9-12 One Semester

A non-credit class that provides an opportunity for students to complete daily homework assignments, Study Hall requires the student to be working or reading at all times during the class period.

STUDY SKILLS

Elective Grade 9 Fall Semester

This required Freshmen course is designed to equip students with tools to be successful throughout their academic journey.   Students will learn the art of organization, character strengths that God wants us to apply to education, test taking procedures, communication skills, memory techniques, vocabulary building and classroom manners.

WRITER’S WORKSHOP (SUMMER SCHOOL ONLY)

Elective Grades 10-12 3 Weeks

This class is specifically for students entering Advanced Placement courses, for the first time, with an emphasis on written communication.  This fast-paced course is designed to promote analytical thinking.  Students will look closely at various types of literature and historical documents while using literary criticism to understand, prove, and apply authorial intent. They will learn to develop solid writing skills in a wide range of areas such as research, persuasion, and short essays.  An emphasis on writing will help the students learn to write a correct five-paragraph essay.  Students will also write a five page expository paper, timed essay writing, as well as a few creative writing projects. 

YEARBOOK

Elective Grades 9-12 Full Year

Prerequisite:  Application and instructor approval required 

This course trains each student in areas of discipline, organization, and interpersonal working relationships with others. The individual tasks vary from student to student. These tasks may include layout and design, photography, writing, organization and management, and proofreading. Digital cameras are required for photographers. The outcome of this class is the production of the CCHS yearbook.
